5 Minutes with Daniel Sturridge

By Lauren Carbran

As a child, he was obsessed with Hugo Boss Boss Bottled. Now Daniel Sturridge is the face of the fragrance’s new campaign: SUCCESS ISN’T BORN. IT’S MADE. We caught up with the England striker to talk fragrance, success and his favourite things…

Daniel SturridgeWhat was your first ever fragrance?

Boss Bottled. I was very young, maybe about nine. It was a sample from my dad’s bedroom and it smelt amazing! That’s why I’m so grateful to be involved with Hugo Boss now.

What do you love most about Boss Bottled?

I love the way it smells: it embodies character, confidence and self-belief. It’s also very manly and reminds me to strive to be successful.

When are you most likely to wear Boss Bottled?

It’s the type of scent to wear day and night. I also wear Hugo Boss Boss Bottled Unlimited. It depends on how I feel at that moment.

What does the smell remind you of?

It reminds me of that first sample of my dad’s, which I tried. It’s really surreal when I smell it. I think it’s because it brings back good memories of my childhood.

What’s your favourite smell?

Vanilla.

What did you want to be when you were younger?

An actor. And, yes, I was in all the school plays. I just loved drama, especially in high school (shout out to my teacher Mrs James!), but I had to stop because of my intense training programme.

If you could be anyone else for the day, who would it be?

President Obama! Just to see what it’s like to be the most powerful man in the world.

What is your worst habit?

Putting on too much aftershave!

Do you have a special talent?

Producing music and being involved with the creativity behind it.

What are you most proud of?

Helping my family to live a better life and giving people hope that they can make it from anywhere through the Hugo Boss #SuccessIsMade campaign. You can make it out of every situation, good or bad, and be successful.

Who’s your inspiration for success?

My parents – because they’ve been there through my journey. My mum used to take me to all my practices as a child. It’s the sacrifices they made that make my life what it is today.

Do you have a motto for success?

Work hard, be strong-minded, and dedicate yourself to what you’re good at.

What’s your favourite food?

Oxtail. Made by my mum. Caribbean style!

What’s your favourite holiday destination?

Jamaica. It’s all about the vibe, good weather, amazing food, culture and being with my family.

What’s your favourite TV programme?

Black-ish. It’s crazy funny.

Where are you most likely to be found on a Saturday night?

At home watching TV, at the cinema or out for dinner. I don’t like clubbing any more – it’s a bit too crazy for me!

What are you most looking forward to this summer?

Hopefully being successful with the England team. I also want to make sure I relax and recuperate. I’ve not booked to go away anywhere, but I’d love to go to St Barts, Jamaica and LA.
