Reviewed: Barbour at London Collections Men SS17

By Lauren Carbran

Barbour’s SS17 show last week was the best of coastal and British heritage merged into one. Yes, I saw the palm-tree prints at Topman and the sunset hues at Berthold SS17, but sometimes I prefer fashion that’s closer to home…

The Barbour SS17 collection has ‘we know it gets chilly here’ written all over it. I loved that the designs are true to British summer, and it was good to see Barbour’s original maritime heritage of providing clothes for men at sea strongly referenced, too. Did you know that Barbour started out by providing garments to sailors, fishermen and dockers to protect them from the worst of the North Sea weather? At least our terrible climate was an inspiration for some!

And the outfits were some of the best quality for the British weather. It was all about khaki and beige shades, with the iconic wax jackets, cosy knitwear and summer shorts ft the Barbour lighthouse beacon. Maritime signal flags appeared on collars and shorts, and the coastal theme extended to bucket hats, rucksacks and duffles. Barbour SS17 takes me back to holidaying at the seaside with umbrellas at the ready! And when I smell Barbour For Him fragrance, the notes of pink pepper, lavender and patchouli take me to the same place.

These are clothes you’d wear and not just stare at in a shop window. The collection has all the right ingredients for everything the British summer throws at us, year after year. Well done, Barbour – you’ve done it again.
